By the early 1990s, digital synthesizers had completely taken over the market, and rack-mount units became popular in both studios and on stage. Thanks to advances in digital technology, Roland began to pack seemingly impossible sounds into a single instrument. And using optional PCM sound cards, users could enhance their instruments with specialized sound sets. Throughout the 1990s, the JV-1080 contributed to the sound of R&B, pop, hip-hop, and rock, and was regularly featured on film and TV soundtracks. Originally designed to emulate acoustic instruments, the sound became so popular that it became part of our collective musical vocabulary. Some consider it the most recorded sound module in history, and modern musicians continue to use these sounds in new and creative ways.
